The Ultimate Packing List For Studying Abroad in China

CategoriesAsian CultureStudent in China

It can be very difficult for students to pack for their trip when they go to study abroad. This is especially true for a country like China which is one of the largest countries in the world. It is, therefore, important to pack the right clothes, shoes, electronics and other essentials to make your study experience smooth. Dont forgot to grab some cool hoodies from before you leave for China. Below is an ultimate packing list for your study in China.

Bring casual clothing, but if you will be going for an internship, then you should carry professional clothing. It’s important to note that it is very difficult to find tall and large clothing and shoes in China. Be smart and bring appropriate shoes like boots, sandals, heels, running shoes, and flip-flops. Chaco sandals are very comfortable, waterproof and will come in handy when roaming around the city or going for an adventure.

China, being one of the largest countries in the world, is bound to experience different types of climates. For instance, the north experiences four seasons while the south experiences muggy summers and mild winters. The kind of clothes you pack will depend on the climate of the area where you will be studying or visiting.

Pack sweat-wicking fabric and quick drying fabric since driers are not common in China. Custom hoodies and coats are appropriate for cold weather while shorts and short sleeved shirts are great for warm weather.

Carry enough underwear since the ones in China are mostly in small sizes. Also, carry at least one outfit for a special occasion like a banquet or a ceremony.

Electronic Devices

Of course, you should carry electronic devices like a laptop, cell phone, charger, an adapter, camera, convertor, and other necessary devices. It is advisable to carry at least three universal power adapters since China has different outlets. Although it is believed that electronics are cheap here, this is far from the truth. Other essentials for this travel include a guidebook, eye glasses and contacts.

Toiletries and Medicine

Toilet paper is essential since you don’t want to be stuck in the bathroom. Other crucial toiletries include shampoo, soap, deodorant, lotion, comb, makeup, and other sanitary and hygiene products. While it is easy to find pads on most supermarkets and cosmetic shops, it is hard to find tampons, deodorant and hand sanitizer in China.

Besides, it can be difficult to find quality cosmetics as some of the creams have a whitening effect. Also, carry any necessary medications like sleeping pills, birth control, insect repellant, prescriptions, and others.

Travel Backpack

A backpack is important in your travel to China as it allows for flexibility and versatility. Look for backpacks with lots of pockets and compartments and have a waterproof construction. It is also recommendable to bring one daypack where you will place your personal items and valuables when out for a day of sightseeing. Ensure that the daypack is light and small yet large enough to accommodate everything you need. Other bags to include in your packing list include a shopping tote bag, checked and carry-on luggage, and a camera case.

When traveling to a new country, it is wise to have emergency cash at hand. For instance, you may want to change $300 in the local currency. You will also need a valid credit card to cater for your study and other expenses. Always check the expiration dates and ensure that they are valid to cover for the whole trip and the duration of the program. Bring a wallet or purse for storing your cash, cards and other important documents.

If you are planning to study in China, it’s important to know what to pack for your trip. While China is a huge country, it may be impossible to find some essential items that will make your stay comfortable.
